The Center for Addiction Studies and Research

The Center for Addiction Studies and Research is a Florida Certification Board accepted distance learning provider of education in the chemical dependency field. Distance learning hours are accepted for Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS), Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC), and Certified Addiction Professional (CAP) certification and continuing education requirements as well as for FCB Prevention, Criminal Justice, and Gambling Addiction certification and continuing education requirements.

 

Educational Requirements

Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS)

Documentation of 150 hours of accepted addiction-specific education and training. At least 70 of those hours must be in the following content areas.

  • Client, Family, Community Education - 5 Clock Hours
  • Clinical Evaluation - 10 Clock Hours
  • Counseling - 20 Clock Hours
  • Documentation - 5 Clock Hours
  • Professional Ethics and Responsibilities - 15 Clock Hours
  • Referral - 5 Clock Hours
  • Service Coordination - 5 Clock Hours
  • Treatment Planning - 5 Clock Hours

The remaining 80 hours must include:

  • Application to Practice/Professional Readiness - 40 Clock Hours
  • Understanding Addiction/Treatment Knowledge - 40 Clock Hours

Within these 80 hours must be a minimum of:

  • Domestic Violence - 2 Clock Hours
  • HIV/AIDS - 4 Clock Hours

There is no limit on the number of contact hours that can be earned through home study distance learning trainings.

Continuing Education Requirements

Documentation of 10 hours of continuing education each year. There is no limit on the number of continuing education contact hours that can be earned through home study distance learning trainings.

Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC)

Associates Degree or High School Diploma/GED. Documentation of 250 hours of accepted addiction-specific education and training. At least 130 of those hours must be in the following content areas.

  • Client, Family, Community Education - 10 Clock Hours
  • Clinical Evaluation - 25 Clock Hours
  • Counseling - 30 Clock Hours
  • Documentation - 10 Clock Hours
  • Professional Ethics and Responsibilities - 30 Clock Hours
  • Referral - 5 Clock Hours
  • Service Coordination - 5 Clock Hours
  • Treatment Planning - 15 Clock Hours

The remaining 120 hours must include:

  • Application to Practice/Professional Readiness - 60 Clock Hours
  • Understanding Addiction/Treatment Knowledge - 60 Clock Hours

Within these 120 hours must be a minimum of:

  • Domestic Violence - 2 Clock Hours
  • HIV/AIDS - 4 Clock Hours

Bachelor's Degree (minimum). Documentation of 350 hours of accepted addiction-specific education and training. At least 190 of those hours must be in the following content areas.

  • Client, Family, Community Education - 15 Clock Hours
  • Clinical Evaluation - 35 Clock Hours
  • Counseling - 50 Clock Hours
  • Documentation - 15 Clock Hours
  • Professional Ethics and Responsibilities - 30 Clock Hours
  • Referral - 5 Clock Hours
  • Service Coordination - 5 Clock Hours
  • Supervision - 15 Clock Hours
  • Treatment Planning - 20 Clock Hours

The remaining 160 hours must include:

  • Application to Practice/Professional Readiness - 80 Clock Hours
  • Understanding Addiction/Treatment Knowledge - 80 Clock Hours

Within these 160 hours must be a minimum of:

  • Domestic Violence - 2 Clock Hours
  • HIV/AIDS - 4 Clock Hours
