The Center for Addiction Studies and Research is an Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals (OCDP) Board approved distance learning provider of education in the chemical dependency field (Provider #01-1416-91-PVN). Distance learning hours are approved for Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant (CDCA), Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC Levels II and III), Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor (LICDC) and Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor – Clinical Supervisor (LICDC-CS) certification and recertification requirements. There is no limit on the number of distance learning hours that can be applied toward certification or recertification requirements.

 

Educational Requirements

Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant (CDCA) Phase One

Documentation of 40 hours of approved chemical dependency specific education in the following eight specified content areas:

  • Addiction Knowledge – 5 Hours
  • Treatment Knowledge – 9 Hours
  • Professionalism – 6 Hours
  • Evaluation – 3 Hours
  • Service Coordination – 4 Hours
  • Documentation – 3 Hours
  • Individual Counseling – 5 Hours
  • Relationship/Group Counseling – 5 Hours

Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant (CDCA) Phase Two

Hold a CDCA Phase One for at least 10 months.

Documentation of 30 hours of approved chemical dependency specific education in the following eight specified content areas:

  • Addiction Knowledge – 5 Hours
  • Treatment Knowledge – 3 Hours
  • Professionalism – 3 Hours
  • Evaluation – 3 Hours
  • Service Coordination – 3 Hours
  • Documentation – 3 Hours
  • Individual Counseling – 5 Hours
  • Relationship/Group Counseling – 5 Hours

Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor II (LCDC II)

An Associate’s degree in Behavioral Science or a Bachelor’s Degree in any field.

Documentation of 180 education hours in chemical dependency education in nine specific content areas.

  • Theories of Addiction (24 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Counseling Procedures/Strategies with Addicted Populations (30 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Group Process and Techniques with Addicted Populations (18 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Assessment and Diagnosis of Addiction (24 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Relationship Counseling with Addicted Populations (24 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Pharmacology (18 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Prevention Strategies (12 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Treatment Planning (18 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Legal and Ethical Issues Pertaining to Chemical Dependency (12 Clock Hour Minimum)

Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor III (LCDC III)
Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in a behavioral science field.

Documentation of 180 education hours in chemical dependency education in the nine specific content areas outlined above.

Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor (LICDC)
Educational Requirements

Master’s Degree in a behavioral science field.

Documentation of 180 education hours in chemical dependency education in the nine specific content areas outlined above.

Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor – Clinical Supervisor (LICDC-CS)
Educational Requirements

Master’s Degree in a behavioral science field.

Documentation of 180 education hours in chemical dependency education in the nine specific content areas outlined above.

Documentation of 30 hours of education in the required clinical supervision specific content areas including a minimum of 4 hours in each of the following areas: counselor development; professional and ethical standards; program development and quality assurance; performance evaluation; administration.

There is no limit on the number of contact hours that can be earned through home study distance learning trainings.

Recertification Requirements

Documentation of forty (40) hours of continuing education every two years. Three (3) of the required forty (40) hours must be in ethics.

Individuals who hold the LICDC-CS credential must also complete six (6) hours of education in clinical supervision topics. A six (6) hour clinical supervision course is available through our program.
