The Center for Addiction Studies and Research is a Tennessee Certification Board accepted distance learning provider of prevention education.
Education Requirements and Courses
Certified Prevention Specialist I (CPS I)
Minimum high school diploma or equivalent (e.g. GED)
Documentation of 120 contact hours of prevention specific training including:
- 50 hours of ATOD prevention specific education
- 28 hours of the following Core Prevention Functions:
- Effective Audience Management (6 hours)
- Prevention Ethics (6 hours)
- Cultural Competency (6 hours)
- Environmental Strategies (10 hours)
There is no limit on the number of hours that can be earned through distance learning trainings.

- Domain 2 – Prevention Education and Service Delivery (20 hours – includes 12 hours of ATOD prevention specific education)
- Domain 3 – Communication (15 hours – includes 6 hours of effective audience management)
- Domain 4 – Community Organization (15 hours – includes 8 hours of ATOD prevention specific education)
- Domain 5 – Public Policy and Environmental Change (15 hours – includes 10 hours in environmental strategies and 6 hours of ATOD prevention specific education)
- Domain 6 – Professional Growth and Responsibility (25 hours – includes 6 hours of prevention ethics and 12 hours of ATOD prevention specific education)
