Integrating Family Therapy into Substance Abuse Treatment (SW)

After attending this course, participants will be able to:
1. Discuss common characteristics of families with substance use disorders and the role of genetics and family history in the development of and recovery from substance use disorders.
2. Discuss family counseling approaches and family-based substance use disorder treatment methods.
3. Discuss the rationale and goals of integrated family counseling for substance use disorders.
4. Discuss the use of behavioral couples therapy approaches to promote the recovery of the family member with substance use disorder.
5. Discuss strategies to engage families in substance use disorder treatment and strategies for incorporating family recovery support group participation in family counseling.
This Reading-based Asynchronous course was created in 2020.
Howard Fogel, Ph.D., CASAC, currently serves as the Educational Director of the program. Dr. Fogel received his doctorate in Educational Psychology from the City University of NY and his Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) certification from the NYS Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS). He has taught psychology and addiction related courses for the past 35 years at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and is currently a certified Education and Training Provider for the NYS OASAS Workforce Development Training Unit.
This course was developed for social work professionals. This course focuses on the integration of family therapy models and family therapy practices into substance abuse treatment.
