Continuing Education Requirements by Participating States
The Center for Addiction Studies and Research is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) Program (ACE Approval Number 1376). The Center for Addiction Studies and Research maintains responsibility for the program. ASWB Approval Period: June 24, 2019 – June 24, 2022. Social workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval for continuing education credits.
Alabama
Documentation of thirty (30) hours of continuing education every two years including three (3) hours in ethics.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Alabama State Board of Social Work Examiners continuing education requirements.
A maximum of twenty (20) of the required thirty (30) continuing education hours may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Alaska
Documentation of forty-five (45) hours of continuing education every two years.
During the first renewal period, documentation of six (6) hours in Alaska Native cross-cultural studies, six (6) hours in substance abuse training, and three (3) hours in professional ethics as part of the forty-five (45) hours of continuing education.
During subsequent renewal periods, documentation of six (6) hours in cross-cultural studies (three (3) hours Alaska Native specific), six (6) hours in substance abuse training, and three (3) hours in professional ethics as part of the forty-five (45) hours of continuing education.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Alaska Board of Social Work Examiners continuing education requirements.
There is no limit on the number of continuing education hours that can be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Arizona
Documentation of thirty (30) hours of continuing education every two years including three (3) hours in behavioral health ethics or mental health law and three (3) hours in cultural competency and diversity.
Appropriate continuing education activities include activities sponsored or approved by national, regional, or state professional associations or organizations in the specialties of marriage and family therapy, professional counseling, social work, or substance abuse counseling.
There is no limit on the number of continuing education hours that can be earned per renewal period through completion of board approved distance-learning trainings.
Arkansas
Documentation of forty-eight (48) hours of continuing education every two years including three (3) hours in professional ethics.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Arkansas Social Work Licensing Board continuing education requirements.
A maximum of twenty (20) of the forty-eight (48) required continuing education hours may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
California
Documentation of thirty-six (36) hours of continuing education for each two-year renewal period including at least six (6) hours in the area of Law and Ethics during each renewal cycle. The six hours shall be considered part of the 36 hour CE requirement.
Documentation of eighteen (18) hours of continuing education for first renewals including at least six (6) hours in the area of Law and Ethics during each renewal cycle. The six hours shall be considered part of the 18 hour CE requirement.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the California Board of Behavioral Sciences social work continuing education requirements.
There is no limit on the number of continuing education hours that can be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning programs.
Mandated Continuing Education Courses:
Mandated courses are one-time only courses and, once taken, need not be taken again. Mandated courses are required for first renewal. Mandated courses that have been taken in the past as part of degree/post-degree programs are not required to be repeated.
- Spousal or Partner Abuse: Completion of a seven-hour course in spousal/partner abuse assessment, detection, and intervention strategies including community resources, cultural factors, and same gender abuse dynamics.
- Aging and Long-Term Care: Completion of a three-hour course in aging and long-term care. The course could include, but is not limited to, the biological, social, and psychological aspects of aging.
- HIV/AIDS: Completion of at least seven hours in the characteristics and method of assessment and treatment of people who live with HIV/AIDS.
Colorado
Documentation of forty (40) professional development hours (PDH) every two years.
No more than twenty (20) PDH in a single professional development activity shall be recognized during each renewal cycle. The seven professional development activities are: Volunteer Service, Consultation, Supervision, Presenting, Coursework, Publication, and Independent Learning.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Colorado Board of Social Work Examiners continuing education requirements.
A maximum of twenty (20) of the required forty (40) hours of continuing education may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
A maximum of five (5) PDH may be carried from the last renewal cycle to the next renewal cycle if the PDH were earned within six (6) months of license expiration and are in excess of the forty (40) PDH required for the current renewal cycle.
Connecticut
Documentation of fifteen (15) hours of continuing education every year including a minimum of one (1) hour on the topic of cultural competency.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Connecticut Department of Public Health social work continuing education requirements.
A maximum of six (6) of the required fifteen (15) hours of continuing education may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Delaware
Documentation of forty-five (45) hours of continuing education every two years including at least three (3) hours in the area of ethics for mental health professionals.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Delaware Board of Clinical Social Work Examiners continuing education requirements.
There is no limit on the number of continuing education hours that can be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
District of Columbia
Documentation of forty (40) hours of continuing education every two years including six (6) hours of Ethics and three (3) hours of HIV/AIDS training.
The 6-hour Ethics training must be completed face-to-face. The 3-hour HIV/AIDS training can be completed through approved distance learning trainings.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the DC Department of Health Board of Social Work continuing education requirements.
A maximum of twelve (12) of the required forty (40) hours of continuing education may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Florida
Documentation of twenty-five (25) hours of continuing education every two years including two (2) hours in Medical Errors (must be taken from a Board-approved Medical Errors provider) and three (3) hours of Ethics and Boundaries.
Documentation of three (3) hours of Laws and Rules and two (2) hours of Domestic Violence are required every third biennium as part of the twenty-five (25) general continuing education hours.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling continuing education requirements.
There is no limit on the number of continuing education hours that can be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Georgia
Documentation of thirty-five (35) hours of continuing education every two years including five (5) hours in professional ethics. Continuing education hours in professional ethics cannot be obtained through distance-learning trainings.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Georgia Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage and Family Therapists social work continuing education requirements.
A maximum of ten (10) of the required thirty-five (35) hours of continuing education may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Hawaii
Beginning with the renewal for the licensing triennium 7/1/2013 – 6/30/2016, each licensee shall complete fifteen (15) hours of continuing education within the renewal period including a minimum of three (3) hours in ethics.
Beginning with the renewal for the licensing triennium 7/1/2016 – 6/30/2019, each licensee shall complete forty-five (45) hours of continuing education within the three year period preceding the renewal date including a minimum of three (3) hours in ethics.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Professional and Vocational Licensing social work continuing education requirements.
There is no limit on the number of continuing education hours that can be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Idaho
Documentation of twenty (20) hours of continuing education every year including a minimum of one (1) hour in professional ethics.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Idaho Board of Social Work Examiners social work continuing education requirements.
There is no limit on the number of continuing education hours that can be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Completed continuing education in excess of twenty (20) hours may be carried over for the following renewal period.
Illinois
Documentation of thirty (30) hours of continuing education relevant to the practice of social work every two years. At least three (3) of the thirty (30) hours must include content related to the ethical practice of social work and at least three (3) of the thirty (30) hours must include content related to cultural competence in the practice of social work.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation social work continuing education requirements.
A maximum of fifteen (15) of the required thirty (30) hours of continuing education may be obtained per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Indiana
Behavioral Health and Human Services Licensing Board
Documentation of forty (40) hours of continuing education every two years, including a minimum of one (1) hour in ethics and professional conduct.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency Behavioral Health and Human Services Licensing Board social work continuing education requirements.
There is no limit on the number of continuing education hours that can be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Iowa
Documentation of twenty-seven (27) hours of approved continuing education every two years including a minimum of three (3) hours in social work ethics.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Iowa Board of Social Work Bureau of Professional Licensure continuing education requirements.
A maximum of twelve (12) of the required twenty-seven (27) hours of continuing education can be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning courses.
Kansas
Documentation of forty (40) hours of approved continuing education every two years including three (3) hours of ethics.
For masters and clinical social work levels, documentation of an additional six (6) hours of diagnosis and treatment as part of the forty (40) total continuing education hours.
All new social workers must have at least six (6) hours of social worker safety awareness training as part of the forty (40) hours of continuing education that is required for licensure renewal. The new requirement applies only to social workers who are renewing their license for the first time. The social worker safety awareness training is a one-time only requirement. Once you have taken the safety training, you have met the requirement.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board social work continuing education requirements.
There is no limit on the number of continuing education hours that can be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Kentucky
Documentation of thirty (30) hours of continuing education every three years including three (3) hours in the area of social work ethics. Courses on social work ethics need to be directly approved by the Kentucky Board of Social Work. The three (3) hour social work ethics requirement must be repeated every renewal cycle.
Documentation of three (3) hours of continuing education in the area of domestic violence during the three (3) year cycle following initial licensure. Once you complete this course during your first license renewal, it does not have to be repeated.
By July 2016, each licensee must complete a six-hour board approved training program on suicide assessment, treatment, and management. The six (6) hour training must be repeated at least one time every six (6) years.
Documentation of one and one-half (1.5) hours of continuing education covering the recognition and prevention of pediatric abusive head trauma at least one time every six (6) years.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Kentucky Board of Social Work continuing education requirements.
There is no limit on the number of continuing education hours that can be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Louisiana
Documentation of twenty (20) clock hours of continuing education every year.
Documentation of three (3) hours of social work ethics every two years.
For renewal of a licensed clinical social work (LCSW) license, no less than ten (10) of the twenty (20) continuing education clock hour requirement shall be clinical content that includes the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Louisiana State Board of Social Work Examiners continuing education requirements.
A maximum of ten (10) of the required twenty (20) continuing education hours may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Maine
Board of Social Worker Licensure
Documentation of twenty-five (25) contact hours of continuing education every two years including four (4) contact hours of ethics.
A maximum of ten (10) of the required twenty-five (25) continuing education contact hours may be earned per renewal period through completion of distance-learning trainings.
LSW-Conditional licensees must complete six (6) contact hours of ethics as well as six (6) contact hours of psychosocial assessment for their first renewal.
Maryland
Documentation of 40 hours (30 for LBSW’s) of Board-approved continuing education every two years, including 3 Category I hours focusing on ethics, professional conduct and boundary issues. Online Ethics programs will not satisfy the Category I Ethics requirement.
Licensees must obtain at least 50% of the required continuing education hours in Category I. All 40 (30 for LBSW) continuing education hours may be earned in Category I.
Category I hours can only be given by Board Authorized Sponsors. Category II activities include programs and activities that are less structured or are not Board-authorized.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners Category I continuing education requirements.
A maximum of 20 (15 for LBSW’s) of the required continuing education hours may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning programs.
Massachusetts
(a) Licensed Independent Clinical Social Workers (LICSWs): Documentation of thirty (30) continuing education hours every two years.
(b) Licensed Certified Social Workers (LCSWs): Documentation of twenty (20) continuing education hours every two years.
(c) Licensed Social Workers (LSWs): Documentation of fifteen (15) continuing education hours every two years.
(d) Licensed Social Work Associates (LSWAs): Documentation of ten (10) continuing education hours every two years.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Social Workers continuing education requirements.
There is no limit on the number of continuing education hours that can be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Michigan
Documentation of forty-five (45) hours of continuing education every three years including at least five (5) hours in ethics and one (1) hour in pain and symptom management.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Michigan Board of Social Work Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs continuing education requirements.
A maximum of ten (10) of the required forty-five (45) hours of continuing education may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Minnesota
Documentation of forty (40) hours of approved continuing education every two years including two (2) hours in ethics.
LICSW licensees must document twenty-four (24) of the forty (40) continuing education hours in clinical content.
Licensing supervisors must document six (6) of the forty (40) continuing education hours in the practice of supervision.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Minnesota Board of Social Work continuing education requirements.
A maximum of fifteen (15) of the required forty (40) hours of continuing education may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Mississippi
Documentation of forty (40) hours of approved continuing education every two years including four (4) hours of approved professional ethics and two (2) hours of approved cultural diversity/multicultural issues/cultural competency training.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Mississippi Board of Examiners for Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists continuing education requirements.
A maximum of twenty (20) of the required forty (40) hours of continuing education may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Ten (10) continuing education hours may be carried over from one renewal to the next. The continuing education hours must have been obtained within the six months immediately prior to the current renewal date.
Missouri
Documentation of thirty (30) hours of approved continuing education every two years including three (3) clock hours of ethics presented by a social worker who has graduated from an accredited school of social work or by a professional who has knowledge of ethics as it relates to the practice of social work.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Missouri Division of Professional Registration Committee for Social Workers continuing education requirements.
A maximum of fifteen (15) of the required thirty (30) hours of continuing education may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.

New Jersey
LCSW: Documentation of 40 hours of continuing education every two years including 5 hours related to ethics and 3 hours related to social and cultural competency. LCSWs may carry a maximum of eight surplus hours into a succeeding biennial period. At least 20 of the 40 required continuing education hours shall be in courses or programs directly related to clinical practice.
LSW: Documentation of 30 hours of continuing education every two years, including 5 hours related to ethics and 3 hours related to social and cultural competency. LSWs may carry a maximum of six surplus hours into a succeeding biennial period.
CSW: Documentation of 20 hours of continuing education every two years, including 5 hours related to ethics and 3 hours related to social and cultural competency. CSWs may carry a maximum of four surplus hours into a succeeding biennial period.
ASWB is an authorized continuing education approval entity of the New Jersey Board of Social Work Examiners.
New Mexico
Documentation of thirty (30) hours of continuing education every two years including six (6) hours in the area of cultural awareness.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the New Mexico Board of Social Work Examiners continuing education requirements.
There is no limit on the number of continuing education hours that can be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
New York
The Center for Addiction Studies and Research is a NYS Education Department’s State Board for Social Work approved provider of continuing education for LMSWs and LCSWs in New York State (SW CE Provider #0108).
Beginning January 1, 2015, each Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) must complete 36 hours of approved continuing education courses for each triennial registration period.
No more than 12 hours of continuing education activities in any 36 month period, or one-third of the total hours in periods of other length, may consist of self-study educational activities from New York State Education Department approved providers.
There is, however, a phase-in period for this requirement for licensees whose next registration period starts during the first three years after January 1, 2015. These licensees will have to complete one hour of acceptable formal continuing education for each month in their registration period after January 1, 2015.
North Carolina
Documentation of forty (40) hours of continuing education every two years including four (4) hours of ethics focused training.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the North Carolina Social Work Certification and Licensure Board continuing education requirements.
A maximum of twenty (20) of the required forty (40) hours of continuing education may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
North Dakota
Documentation of thirty (30) hours of approved continuing education every two years including two (2) hours of social work ethics.

Eight (8) of the required sixteen (16) hours of continuing education may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Oregon
LCSW: Documentation of forty (40) hours of approved continuing education every two years including six (6) hours in ethics. Up to 10 hours may be carried over from each CEU reporting period.
LMSW: Documentation of thirty (30) hours of approved continuing education every two years including six (6) hours in ethics.
RBSW: Documentation of twenty (20) hours of approved continuing education every two years including six (6) hours in ethics.
CSWA: A certified social work associate is not required to complete continuing education.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Oregon State Board of Licensed Social Workers continuing education requirements.

Pennsylvania
Documentation of thirty (30) hours of approved continuing education every two years including three (3) hours related to ethical issues.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors continuing education requirements.
A maximum of twenty (20) of the required thirty (30) hours of continuing education may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Rhode Island

Tennessee
LBSW: Documentation of nine (9) hours of approved continuing education every year. Four (4) of the nine (9) hours shall be in social work. Three (3) of the nine (9) hours shall be in professional ethics.
LMSW: Documentation of twelve (12) hours of approved continuing education every year. Seven (7) of the twelve (12) hours shall be in social work. Three (3) of the twelve (12) hours shall be in professional ethics.
LAPSW and LCSW: Documentation of fifteen (15) hours of approved continuing education every year. Ten (10) of the fifteen (15) hours shall be in social work. Three (3) of the fifteen (15) hours shall be in professional ethics.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Tennessee Board of Social Worker Licensure continuing education requirements.
A maximum of two-thirds (2/3) of the required continuing education hours may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Texas
Documentation of thirty (30) hours of approved continuing education every two years including a minimum of six (6) hours of continuing education in professional ethics and social work values.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners continuing education requirements.
There is no limit on the number of continuing education hours that can be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
A licensee may carry over to the next renewal period up to ten (10) credit hours earned in excess of the continuing education renewal requirements.
Utah
Social Work Licensing Board
LCSW: Documentation of 40 hours of approved continuing education every two years including a minimum of 3 hours in ethics/law.
SSW: Documentation of 20 hours of approved continuing education every two years including a minimum of 3 hours in ethics/law.
CSW: CSWs are exempt from all continuing education requirements.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing Social Work Licensing Board continuing education requirements.
A maximum of fifteen (15) of the required LCSW/SSW continuing education hours may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Up to ten hours of the excess over the required number may be carried over to the next two-year renewal cycle.
Vermont
Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker: Documentation of twenty (20) hours of continuing education every two years including at least one and one-half (1.5) hours in ethics of social work practice covering such issues as boundaries, confidentiality, and dual relationships.
At least fifteen (15) of the required twenty (20) contact hours shall consist of formal in person educational experiences. No more than five (5) hours of continuing education may be in informal or self-directed educational activities.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation social work continuing education requirements.
A maximum of five (5) of the required twenty (20) hours of continuing education may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Licensed Master’s Social Worker: Documentation of ten (10) hours of continuing education every two years. All hours must consist of formal education.
Virginia
LCSW: Documentation of thirty (30) hours of approved continuing education every two years including a minimum of two (2) hours pertaining to ethics or the standards of practice for the behavioral health professions or to laws governing the practice of social work in Virginia.
LSW: Documentation of fifteen (15) hours of approved continuing education every two years including a minimum of two (2) hours pertaining to ethics or the standards of practice for the behavioral health professions or to laws governing the practice of social work in Virginia.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy Department of Health Professions Virginia Board of Social Work Category I continuing education requirements.
There is no limit on the number of Category I continuing education hours that can be earned per renewal period through ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
Washington
Documentation of thirty-six (36) hours of approved continuing education every two years including six (6) hours in professional law and ethics.
Beginning with the first full CE period after January 1, 2014, social workers must complete six (6) hours of training in suicide assessment, treatment and management. The training must be repeated once every six years.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the Washington State Department of Health Social Worker Credentialing continuing education requirements.
A maximum of twenty-six (26) of the required thirty-six (36) hours of continuing education may be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning trainings.
West Virginia
Documentation of forty (40) hours of approved continuing education every two years.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy a maximum of ten Category I continuing education hours and a maximum of 20 Category II Individual Professional Activities (IPA) continuing education hours required by the West Virginia Board of Social Work.
Wisconsin
Documentation of thirty (30) hours of approved continuing education every two years including four (4) hours in the area of professional ethics and boundaries related to the practice of social work.
The four (4) hour ethics requirement needs to be completed in an interactive learning format.
The remainder of the thirty (30) required continuing education hours may be obtained from any CE program approved, sponsored, provided, endorsed or authorized by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB).
Wyoming
Documentation of forty-five (45) hours of approved continuing education every two years including three (3) hours in the area of professional ethics.
