Social Work Requirements
Documentation of thirty-six (36) hours of continuing education for each two-year renewal period including at least six (6) hours in the area of Law and Ethics during each renewal cycle. The six hours shall be considered part of the 36 hour CE requirement.
Documentation of eighteen (18) hours of continuing education for first renewals including at least six (6) hours in the area of Law and Ethics during each renewal cycle. The six hours shall be considered part of the 18 hour CE requirement.
ASWB approved continuing education trainings can be used to satisfy the California Board of Behavioral Sciences social work continuing education requirements.
There is no limit on the number of continuing education hours that can be earned per renewal period through completion of ASWB approved distance-learning programs.
Mandated Continuing Education Courses:
Mandated courses are one-time only courses and, once taken, need not be taken again. Mandated courses are required for first renewal. Mandated courses that have been taken in the past as part of degree/post-degree programs are not required to be repeated.
- Spousal or Partner Abuse: Completion of a seven-hour course in spousal/partner abuse assessment, detection, and intervention strategies including community resources, cultural factors, and same gender abuse dynamics.
- Aging and Long-Term Care: Completion of a three-hour course in aging and long-term care. The course could include, but is not limited to, the biological, social, and psychological aspects of aging.
- HIV/AIDS: Completion of at least seven hours in the characteristics and method of assessment and treatment of people who live with HIV/AIDS.
